The JTR is explicit: DLA for a first duty station move only applies to members with dependents who are relocating their family. If you're a single E-1 reporting to your first duty station, you don't receive DLA.** If you have a spouse or children and your family is physically relocating to your new duty station, DLA is authorized even for a first duty station move. The key is whether dependents are actually moving. ## Weight Allowances for First Duty Station Your weight allowance for the first duty station move is the same standard allowance as any other PCS move based on your pay grade. As a new E-1 without dependents, that's 5,000 pounds. You almost certainly don't own 5,000 pounds of household goods, so weight won't be a limiting factor for most brand-new service members. A household goods move is available to you even if you're only using a fraction of your allowance. There's no minimum weight requirement to use the entitlement. ## What You Do Receive on a First Duty Station Move Despite the DLA restriction, the remaining entitlements are meaningful: - MALT: Currently $0.235/mile (as of July 1, 2026) for driving from your home of record to your first duty station (for one personally owned vehicle, if you own one) - Per diem: $178/day for the service member for authorized travel days between home of record and first duty station - Household goods shipment: Government-arranged move of your belongings from home of record to your gaining installation - TLE: Up to 21 days of temporary lodging reimbursement at your gaining installation while you wait for permanent housing (effective Nov 27, 2024, JTR MAP 66-24(R)) ## Barracks vs. Off-Post Housing As a junior enlisted member at your first duty station, there's a good chance you'll be required to live in the barracks (government quarters) rather than having the option to live off-post. At many installations, E-1 through E-3 members without dependents are required to live in the barracks. The rules vary significantly by installation and branch. If you're required to live in the barracks, you don't receive BAH — it's retained by the housing system as part of the cost of providing your quarters. This is a significant financial consideration. An E-1 who lives in the barracks has substantially different take-home pay than an E-1 who lives offpost and receives BAH. Understand your installation's policy before you assume you'll have housing flexibility. ## Travel from Home of Record, Not Anywhere You Happen to Be Your PCS travel entitlement for a first duty station move runs from your **home of record — the address you listed when you enlisted or commissioned — to your gaining duty station. If you completed training at a base different from your home of record, your authorized origin point for travel to your first duty station may differ from your home of record — this varies by situation, so don't assume. Read your orders carefully to confirm the authorized origin point for your travel, and ask your TMO if it isn't clear.** MALT and per diem are calculated based on the official distance from your authorized origin to your gaining duty station — not from wherever you happened to be when you started driving. ## Your TMO Appointment: Schedule It Early First-time movers often don't realize they need a TMO appointment — they assume the move happens automatically or that someone will tell them what to do. It doesn't, and they won't necessarily. Schedule your Transportation Management Office appointment as soon as your orders are in hand. You'll need to provide your orders and complete a move request through the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at **dps.move.mil**. The old public move.mil portal has been retired, so a bookmark or a search result pointing there will not load. ## Managing Finances Through the Transition The gap between your last payment at training and your first full month of pay at your new duty station, combined with out-of-pocket move costs, catches many first-duty-station service members short on cash. Plan for this gap. Keep emergency funds accessible — don't spend your last training paycheck on non-essentials expecting the PCS entitlements to cover everything immediately.
